Under the direction of the Office of the Chief of Police, staff members consistently monitor new funding opportunities from federal and state agencies and administer active grant-funded initiatives. Grant funds provide critical support to the Indio Police Department; the Department uses grant funds to purchase modern, public safety equipment and to implement cost-effective law enforcement initiatives in order to better serve Indio residents.

The Indio Police Department is nationally recognized as a progressive law enforcement agency. Presently, the Department is part of a selected cohort of 15 jurisdictions participating in the Safer Neighborhoods through Precision Policing Initiative, in collaboration with the COPS Office, the CNA research corporation and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). The goal of the initiative is to both refine and develop best practices in police-community collaboration and trust, and to share lessons learned with thousands of law enforcement agencies across the county.

Additionally, the Department is part of the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA)–sponsored Strategies for Policing Innovation program (SPI) that supports law enforcement agencies in building evidence-based, data-driven law enforcement strategies. Through this initiative, the Department also partners with researchers from the Arizona State University (ASU) and from the University of California, Riverside (UCR).

In recent years, the Indio Police Department has been awarded more than $8.4 million in grant funding from various federal and state grantors, such as the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office), and the California Department of Finance, to name a few.
